Fundamentals of Human-Machine Systems


This course offers an overview of interdisciplinary problems and results when designing, analyzing and evaluating human-machine systems.

Based on a holistic approach instructional as well as factual knowledge is provided in a variety of topics. Within the course we concentrate on fundamentals from human sciences (idea of man, concepts of automation, core concepts in psychophysiology, human problem solving and decision making), design concepts (particularly design of sozio-technical systems), modeling and alternating current topics: 

  • Systems engineering and design of human-machine systems (fundamentals from human and engineering sciences),
  • Modeling and simulation using the example of the "human controler",
  • Ecological interface design and screen handling,
  • Reliabilty as new security model (technical failure versus human reliability),
  • The "learning organization", decision guidance and assistance systems,
  • Knowledge, skill acquisition and learning,
  • Evaluation of products and systems,
  • Situations and trends.
